Run a Race on Midway's Airfield
Also in this week's '3 Things to Do in Chicago,' a big, free, music fest and gallery tour.
How cool is this? You can run a 5K race on the Midway Airport airfield Sunday while planes are taking off and landing — presumably on a different runway. Proceeds benefit Special Olympics Chicago. It’s the first of its kind race at the airport. The race starts at 8 a.m. You can register ahead of time at Running Excels, 10328 South Western Avenue, on Thursday from 2-7:30 p.m. or on race day from 6-7:45 a.m. in the Southwest Airlines Hangar. Cost is $40.

Wondering what goes on in the artsy area around Halsted and 18th Street? You can check it out Friday night between 6-10 p.m. when 30 studios and artists’ spaces open their doors to the public. Stay in the neighborhood for dinner at one of the excellent Mexican restaurants nearby.

In its 15th year, this 11-day festival brings an eclectic mix of international music to indoor and outdoor venues around the city. Here’s the complete schedule. All the shows are free. (Free!) The Chicago Reader gives a hearty thumbs up to this year’s lineup, particularly RagaMala, the 15-hour, all-night Indian music-a-thon starting Friday evening.
