Orland Park Named One of the Best Places to Live in Suburbs

What makes Orland Park tops in the 'burbs? Chicago Magazine has a few things to say about that.

Orland Park is one of Chicago's best suburbs to call home.

Though it's known largely for its shopping epicenter Orland Square Mall  and Orland Park Crossing, Orland Park offers homeowners a lot more for their buck, than a place to spend it,  Chicago Magazine wrote. Those who love the outdoors can choose from many well-kept fields, forests, and ponds, they wrote. The village is also warming up to renters, with more options such as Ninety7Fifty on the Park popping up.

The writers delved into statistics from Midwest Real Estate Data, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the police departments of Chicago and Illinois for every town in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will Counties and every community area in Chicago for which the city collects statistics.

What Counts

Crime Rate
For a community to be considered, it must have a crime rate lower than than 7.0 offenses per 1,000 inhabitants last year. And the violent crime rate must not exceed the county average. Orland's Crime Rate: .3 per 1,000 residents.Education
The community must have a public school with students who score above average on standardized tests. It should also not have a student body that is 92 percent of residents are of any one race.

Other Factors
The writers weighed ease of transportation (Orland has three Metra stops), median home prices (Orland's is $275,000), and vibrancy.
