Lightning Believed to Cause Roof Fire

Residents in the house felt impact while lightning was in the area, and neighbors alerted them that smoke was coming from the roof.

No one was injured when a small fire started inside a house roof Wednesday night that officials believe was caused by lightning.

The Orland Fire Protection District was called about a roof fire at a house in the 11000 block of New Mexico Lane in southwest Orland Park, around 6:45 p.m.

Lightning activity was in the area, and residents felt an impact on the house, before neighbors alerted them that smoke was coming from the roof, according to Orland Fire Chief Ken Brucki.

All residents were outside the home when firefighters arrived. A small fire was found inside the roof and was extinguished about five minutes after crews arrived, Brucki said.

The home sustained damage to the roof and smoke damage inside, Brucki said.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, though signs pointed to a lightning strike, according to Brucki.
