Car Fires and YOU

Kids practice fire drills at school. Many families have an escape plan if their house ever ignites. But do you know what to do if your car catches fire while you’re running errands along LaGrange? From 2006-2010, there was an average of 152,300 car fires EACH YEAR. That’s about 17 automobile fire reports an hour, and 4 deaths per week. Firehouse Subs is dedicated to its firehouse theme, and that includes promoting fire safety! Check out our tips below so you’re prepared if the worst ever happens while on the road:

1. Fuses that blow more than once, oil and fluid leaks (including unsecured oil caps), and rapid changes in fuel, fluid levels or engine temperatures put your car at risk to catch fire. Pay attention to vehicle recall notices or governmental warnings about the make and model of your car.

2. If you must transport gasoline, only carry small amounts in a sealed, certified container. Never store gas or propane cylinders in the passenger compartment, and keep the windows open for ventilation.

3. If your car catches fire while driving, pull over safely and shut off the engine. Stand at least 100 feet away from the burning vehicle. Call 9-1-1. NEVER attempt to put out the fire yourself-- the fuel could be ignited in the tank.

4. Never park with dry, flammable materials, like grass, touching the underside of your car.

5. Have your car checked regularly by a professional. Mechanical or electrical failures or malfunctions were factors in about two-thirds of the automobile fires. Don’t risk a preventable accident!
