1. Stay in the kitchen and check your cooking frequently. The #1 cause of kitchen fires is unattended cooking, usually on the stove. Use a timer to remind you that there’s something brewing in the kitchen!

4. Only use fire-safe cigarettes, and only smoke outside. Most deaths result from fires in bedrooms, living rooms or dens, and 1 in 4 deaths from smoking fires was not the smoker.

5. Only one heat-producing appliance like toasters and coffee makers should be plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time. If a wall outlet becomes discolored, warm or begins to spark, immediately call a qualified electrician or your landlord.
