Chicago Lighthouse & Best Buy Bring Low Vision Products Show to Orland Park

In an effort to reach out to residents of the southwest suburbs who may be experiencing vision loss, The Chicago Lighthouse together with Best Buy is bringing a free Low Vision Products Road Show to Orland Park on Monday, May 7th, from 10 am to 2 pm.

The presentation, which was initiated by Best Buy, will take place at a Senior Technology Fair at the Orland Township Offices, 14807 S. Ravinia.

It is the result of a recent partnership between Best Buy and the Lighthouse to bring the latest in low vision technological advancements to customers and to raise awareness to the public about special technology for persons experiencing vision loss due to glaucoma, macular degeneration and other factors.

On display will be a wide array of products designed to help in school, work and daily living.  Highlights will include products for independent living including talking clocks and watches, kitchen items and large button phones; computer aides including keyboards, accessibility software and speech to text dictation programs; and technology including voice activated GPS, reading devices such as the Intel Reader, the new Synergy CCTV video magnifier in striking natural color and portable hand-held CCTV magnifiers enabling the user to read and write anywhere!

Lighthouse staff members will also be available to conduct demonstrations, answer any questions and offer advice.
Tom Perski, senior vice president of rehabilitation services at the Lighthouse who is visually impaired himself, will also speak on the challenges of successfully coping with age-related macular degeneration in a special address at 11 am.

The Chicago Lighthouse’s vision rehabilitation service can prescribe magnifying glasses and special optical aids to help customers.
