Sandburg Volleyball Places Third at Wheaton Classic

The Sandburg girls volleball team entered play at the Wheaton Classic after coming off a commanding victory in its home-opener against Thornton Thursday (25-7, 25-4).

The two-game sweep was good for Eagle momentum and  carried that momentum over in Wheaton.

The Eagles opened with a 25-20, 25-21 sweep of Marist, handing the RedHawks their first loss of the season. And they advanced to semifinal play before losing to Hinsdale South 25-20, 25-20.

In the third place match, Sandburg defeated Hinsdale Central 25-21, 25-20. In the pool play stages of the tournament, the Eagles defeated both Downers Grove North (26-24, 25-15) and Plainfield Central (25-18, 25-22).

The Eagles picked up outstanding efforts from senior setter Kara Kentner (44 assists) and junior outside hitter Dakota Hampton (28 kills). Junior  added 26 kills and junior libero Kendell Riechman had 30 digs.

Sandburg resumes play Tuesday at Lincoln-Way West and plays host to Lincoln-Way North on Thursday. The Eagles (9-2) will participate in the Rich East tournament over the weekend.

Sandburg Football Escapes L-W Central

For the second straight week, the Sandburg football team found some timely heroics to secure a victory. This time, however, it was the offense which came up with the winning drive against Lincoln-Way Central. Anthony Adams connected with Nick Lehnerer on a 33-yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles the slim 31-28 win. It doesn't get any easier for Sandburg (4-0, 2-0), which will play will at Lincoln-Way East (4-0, 2-0) on Friday night.

Eagles Soccer Takes Third at L-W Invite

Sandburg used a big  to secure a spot in the semifinals and eventually took third place at Lincoln-Way Invite boys soccer tournament.

In the third-place match, the Eagles faced Marian Catholic and posted a 3-0 shutout. Peter Gertos, Zack Biel and Kevin Kroll all scored goals for Sandburg (6-3-3). The Eagle sophomores notched a 4-2 win over St. Ignatius to win Lincoln-Way Invite.

Cross Country Eagles Place in Peoria

The Sandburg boys cross country team placed 15th at the Peoria Notre Invite. The Eagles were led by Pat McMahon, who notched a time of 15:02 for three miles. Other scoring runners were Pat Letz (15:47), Chris Hogan (15:48), Jimmy Panozzo (15:49) and Aaron Graves (16:04).

Michigan Football: Schofield Sees Action

Redshirt sophomore offensive tackle Michael Schofield made his first collegiate start for the Wolverines' in a 34-10 victory over Western Michigan on Sept. 3. Michigan. He also saw action in Michigan's first home night game on Sept. 10 in a 35-31 victory over Notre Dame. And he saw action in a 31-3 victory over Eastern Michigan on offense and special teams on Sept. 17, but did not start, according to Michigan's player participation stats sheet.

Schofield is a 2008 Sandburg graduate.
