Girls Bowling: Sandburg's Powell Places Second in State Tournament

Sandburg junior Nicole Powell scorched the lanes en route to a second-place finish in the IHSA girls bowling state tournament Saturday at Cherry Bowl in Rockford.

Sandburg junior Nicole Powell had a hot hand.

She rolled a 696 series and a 671 series on the second day of competition in the IHSA girls bowling state tournament at Cherry Bowl in Rockford. And, with games of 257 and 258 included, she wound up placing second Saturday in the individual competition.

Powell finished with a 223.7 average for 12 games and a pinfall total of 2,684. She ended up 80 pins back of individual medalist Morgan Flaherty, a junior from Lincoln-Way West. Flaherty finished with a total of 2,764.

Powell's cousin, Josh, led Andrew to the IHSA boys bowling state championship last week at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon. The T-Bolt girls captured the school's second state title in a row on the lanes.

Andrew finished with an average of 205.8 for 60 games and a pinfall total of 12,349. Minooka placed second at 12,327—22 pins off the T-Bolts' torrid pace. Waubonsie Valley finished third at 12,224.
