Sports Video Highlight Reel: Eagles 'Struck' a Chord

Sandburg picked up some strong performances up and down its lineup en route to a sixth-place finish out of 17 teams in the annual Pete Struck boys track and field invitational.

Despite cold and rainy conditions, the Sandburg boys track and field team made a strong showing in the annual Pete Struck Invitational.

A number of Eagle individuals and relay teams fought through the elements to turn in top performances in the meet on Thursday, April 28. In the field events, Michael Clark took fifth in the triple jump (40-8) and Dovydas Kackys tied for sixth in the high jump (5-8 1/4). Jerry Blake finished 14th in the shot put (39-10) and 13th in the discus (113-10).

The Sandburg 3,200-meter relay team placed second with a time of 8:24:17, while Mike Tortorelli (9:43:79) and Mitch Rees (9:50:92) finished second and third in the 3,200 meters. Danny DeWolf placed sixth in the 800 run with a time of 2:05:70. Derek Hevel (4:33:74) and Kevin O'Flaherty (4:35:20) nabbed the first two spots in the 1,600-meter race.

Overall, Joliet West took home the team crown with 79 points, followed by Brother Rice (78), Crete-Monee (72) and Hillcrest (66). Sandburg finished in sixth place with 47.5 points. The top individual on the day was Gary Ford from Thornridge. He took first in the high jump (6-2), long jump (21-11), the 110-meter hurdles (14.15) and the 300 hurdles (37.43).
