Verzbicas Running in Footsteps of Greats

Sandburg distance ace took a trip to Boston for a pre-marathon race and turned in another strong showing.

This past Monday was the 115th running of the Boston Marathon, and while Sandburg's Lukas Verzbicas wasn't in the field of 26,000, he was in Boston last Sunday to compete in one of several pre-marathon races.

Verzbicas ran in the Boston Athletic Association Invitational Mile. He finished in second, just one-tenth of a second behind the British pro Andrew Baddeley. The Boston Globe was on hand to cover the race.

Sandburg Boys' Volleyball Still No. 1

After a victory over Stagg on Monday, top-rated Sandburg followed up with a straight-sets win over Andrew. In the match against the T-Bolts, Kevin Groeper, Bill Siroky and Tom Carmody each had four kills. Nick Bendell tacked on 22 assists as the Eagles won by scores 25-19 and 25-21.

Eagles' Girls Soccer Still Unbeaten

Sandburg finished the week with a record of 10-0-1. The Eagles notched wins over Lockport and Wheaton-Warrenville South on Wednesday and Thursday.

Sandburg beat the Porters 1-0 . Ciara O'Shea scored the lone goal and Carly Katalinic had the assist. Then, in the opening round of the Naperville Invitational, the Eagles defeated Wheaton-Warrenville South 1-0. Carson Moesle scored on a penalty kick. Victoria Kappel recorded the shutout. She now has nine shutouts under her belt in 11 matches.

Sandburg Badminton Flies into Postseason

The Sandburg badminton team finished the regular season on Monday with a 13-2 win over Lincoln-Way East. The Eagles (11-1-1) were led by Katie Wagner (21-13, 21-11) and Kara Kentner (21-7, 21-7) in the singles matches, and Carolyn Brown/Rachel Allen (21-8, 22-20) and Alexis Andrews/Vicky Gugala (21-15, 21-17) in doubles.

Eagles Softball Team Streaking

After a slow start, Sandburg is now 9-4 and 2-0 in the Southwest Suburban Blue after a big 3-0 win over Lockport on Monday. Lexi Bryant started the scoring with a double, and Lora Olson allowed just three hits in the victory. The dynamic duo of Bryant and Jess Perkins recently was profiled in the Southtown-Star.

Extra Points

The Sandburg tennis team defeated Bolingbrook 7-0 to improve to 4-0. Eric Pontow, Yasir Shihabudeen and Mike Carlo were all winners in singles action.  The team of Brad Smith and Mike Dressel won in doubles.

* The SouthtownStar wrapped up Sandburg water polo action. The boys lost 7-4 against Homewood-Flossmoor. The girls improved to 14-3 after a big come from behind win against Lincoln-Way Central (13-12).

* Up-and-coming local boxer Nick Gigliotti was profiled by the Chicago Sun-Times. According to the article, Gigliotti has aspirations of winnng the Golden Gloves Title.
