Water Polo: Sandburg Boys Enjoy Last Splash

The Eagles edged Naperville Central in a thriller, but fell to Fenwick and Loyola en route to a fourth-place finish in the IHSA state tournament.

The Sandburg boys water polo team put together another sparkling season. The Eagles finished their fourth-place run in the IHSA state tournament with a pair of disappointing setbacks. But the two losses did nothing to take the glow off a 15-14 victory over Naperville Central in a quarterfinal thriller.

Balys Gintautas put the winning goal in the net with just 13 seconds left in the extra period as the Eagles ousted the Redhawks. It was the fourth time in as many years that Naperville Central has missed a chance at a state trophy.

Then, Sandburg was overpowered by eventual state champ Fenwick in the semifinals 14-2. The Eagles met Loyola in a battle for third but were unable to get much going. Loyola got the best of Sandburg, winning 9-4. Gintautas and Mike Malecki split the scoring with two goals each.
