District 135 Celebrates Read Across America

District 135 primary students were introduced to Creepy Carrots, Chicks and Salsa and Carnivores during the nationwide celebration Read Across America.  New York Times bestselling children’s author Aaron Reynolds spoke to students in kindergarten through third grade to promote excitement of reading!  He presented why he began writing children’s books and the perseverance he had in receiving 390 rejection letters before his first book was published. Students also played the role of writer, illustrator and publisher to learn the process of how a story transforms from an idea into a published book. Mr. Reynolds visited classrooms, signed books and answered a myriad of questions from the students.

Other District activities included Grandparents Day visits at Center School, Dr. Seuss projects and book reading in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  Centennial School held cross-curricular activities that included poetry reading, math games and Dr. Seuss projects, activities and dedicated reading times with Principal Keri DeYoung.

Read Across America is recognized by the National Education Association and is celebrated by over 45 million students, parents and educators nationwide.
